Have you tried metallic russet browns (deep browns that are very rich and a little red or burgundy toned) like MAC Antiqued or Coastal Scents Raisin Berry? You can keep it close to the lash line for day, and wear it all over the entire lids for a warm, smoky look at night.
If your hair leans toward a softer copper or dark blonde, try a shade like MAC Sable. The key is to also use a black or dark brown liner and mascara so your lash line doesn’t disappear into your shadow.
