Midnight Electro-Violet: Sculpted Intense-Purple Eye

The problem with violets and purples for a lot of people is the fact that when you choose something that isn’t vibrant enough, it can look muddy and unflattering on the lids.

If you’re one of those who feels purple never works on you, it’s an idea to go for a color that is true purple or leaning slightly towards the blue-toned side.

For this look, I wanted a bright grape color, followed by a dark purple along the socket line for definition. This is an alternative to a typical smoky eye when you’re going out at night.

Candy-Bloom Pink Eyeshadow Look

Pink eyeshadow is tricky a lot of times. If you’re not careful it can look like you have swollen, puffy eyes. There are a couple of key steps you should take note of later that can help when you are wearing ANY pink.

This look is good for:

  • Monolids, hooded lids, regular lids
  • Any eye color

I’m doing a demo using some individual shadow shades from BH Cosmetics. You can use whatever you have, but if you’re just starting out with pink and want a low cost option, these are a nice silky formula for a very low price.

I used a bright medium peachy pink (WM04), a purplish mauve for the socket (WS07), a dark warm brown in the outer V and along the lashline (MM06) and a pale strawberry-milkshake pink on the inner corners (WS19).

Applying Cluster Lashes: How to Choose and Apply

Revisiting a lash cluster guide for those who didn’t see the first one, or just want a bit more explanation. The first thing to remember about cluster lashes is that they are very different from full strip lashes. They’re not meant to alter the look of your eyes. They aren’t there to stand in place of your natural lashes the way some girls use strip lashes.

Used right, they are meant to bulk up what you already have while staying very invisible and natural-looking. Try these if you:

  • Don’t like or want the unnatural look of full-strip lashes
  • Find full-strip lashes hard to apply
  • Can’t find strip lashes that are the right size for your eye
  • Don’t want to alter the look of your lash line

5 Recommended Drugstore Mascaras (plus an amazing lash primer)
—-
lucy-is-vile:
What are your top 5 mascaras for under $12? thanks. :)
It was harder than expected to nail down 5 mascaras under US$12 specifically, as prices vary so much internationally, so I will just stick to recommending drugstore mascaras that I’ve personally tried and loved over the years.
If these happen to cost more then US$12 where you are located (like me), I’m sorry about that!
—-
1. L’oreal Voluminous: You’ve heard it before. This is the drugstore version of Dior Show mascara with a smaller, easier-to-handle brush. I stockpile this (both the regular and Carbon Black versions) because they’re not sold in many parts of Asia, and I can’t imagine not having this mascara. Some people find it clumpy but I’ve never had any issues. These are my absolute favorite for giving fluffy, feathery, full lashes that don’t look like burnt-twigs.
—-
2. Rimmel Glam Eyes Mascara (non-waterproof in pink tube)
This works quite like Rimmel Sexy Curves, but is a bit better for people with sparser lashes. Separates and builds quite quickly for a more dramatic look, but I find it does not give the wispy “born-with-it” lashes L’oreal Voluminous gives me.
—-
3. Bourjois Volumizer Mascara
Many people either love or hate this. I’ve found people who hate it haven’t quite gotten the knack of working with it. You can use the Step 1 brush as a primer and then layer on Step 2 for killer volume, but the way I personally like to use it is actually to apply Step 2 FIRST, and then separate and sweep off clumps with the Step 1 brush. This is like L’oreal Voluminous on steroids.
—-
4. Revlon Grow Luscious (Original)
This dried out very fast for me, which is my only beef with the formula. I did enjoy it very much, as it also gives you feathery, natural-looking lashes. The bonus is that it conditions them as well, but I wouldn’t say it actually makes your lashes GROW longer. The brush is quite similar to Dior Show but if you have problems with keeping mascara off your lids, then this mascara is not for you as it’s huge and dense. But for many people outside of the US and UK, Revlon Grow Luscious is available and Voluminous is not.

Honorable Mention
5. Shiseido Lash Expander Frame Plus
This fiber mascara lengthens by applying tiny fibers onto the tips of your natural lashes and creates natural-looking temporary extensions. As someone who HATES the look of clumpy or obviously unnatural lashes, this was a staple before I got into Bourjois and L’oreal mascaras. I did not list it as part of the main list because outside of Japan (and occasionally on eBay), the mascara costs an arm and a leg. In Japan, it only costs about US$10 while local buyers in Singapore have to shell out a ridiculous US$20-21 (SGD$25.90), which is the price of high-end mascaras in the West.
But this mascara is for a specific purpose; building believable length. If you have sparse lashes and need volume, this will not do it for you.

PLUS!! Lash Primer of choice:
Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator
It might sound unlikely but this coats your lashes and works as the best primer if you don’t like those chalky-white lash primers that give you lash tips that go helter-skelter. It protects and conditions your lashes, works as a primer, AND costs US$2. (It’s more expensive than that in other parts of the world, but still incredibly cheap.)
An important thing is to make sure that you get a tube that is cloudy white; not yellowish or orange as those would have “turned”. Sometimes drugstores don’t get rid of old stock, so it’s important to be careful when it comes to products that go on your eyes and skin.

"I was wondering if you do anything special to your lashes (extra care or any sort), because they are incredibly long and beautiful! I am Asian and have straight lashes, but after some curling, they still do not look as long as yours!"

Asked by soiiabeans

Hi Soiiabeans, I try to use a lash serum daily (although sometimes I forget). I’m using Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator, which I like better than the L’oreal one (which is much more expensive too).

I don’t think any of these generic serums you get at drugstores actually stimulate lash growth so much as condition them so they don’t break or fall easily, which then allows them to last and grow a bit longer.

One other thing: The Ardell serum is a great mascara primer. It contains teflon and coats lashes like one of those white lash primers (except it’s transparent and does not make your lashes look weird and clumpy), and mascara looks better over it, so I think that’s probably the real benefit haha.

Big, Fat Lashes: Full Strip Double-Lash Demo
—-
Makeup artists stack lashes for a real lush-lashed bombshell look. Unlike wearing a strip of dense, glossy, showgirl lashes, stacked lashes are more irregular, more wispy looking, and somehow more subtly-glamorous looking.
The trick is to stack two different lashes.

(Ardell 122s stacked over Ardell 110s.)
As a rule of thumb, don’t stack dramatic, dense unnatural looking lashes. Stacking two subtle, loosely-woven lashes like Ardell Beauties and Wispies will give you a better effect.
—-

Step 1: As a base, don’t wear too much eye makeup unless you’re intentionally going for a drag look. Apply a little neutral or warm shade along the socket line just for definition, as all the attention is going to go to your lash line.
—-
Step 2: Apply black liquid liner along the upper lash line, and then the first strip of false lashes as close to the roots as you can get. I usually apply them with tweesers, then let them sit for awhile before using my fingers to press down.

—-
Step 3: Let the first pair of lashes set for a minute, and then prepare your second set of lashes. It’s important to use good lash glue (DUO rocks) and lashes with flexible and thin bands when you are using double-lashes. Trying to stack two strips with stiff lash bands is a nightmare.
Gently press the second strip down at the center and make sure it’s in the right position before you tuck the outer and inner corners down. This is going to be hard without tweezers, as you’ll already be having trouble locating the second strip among all those lashes.

—-
Step 4: Apply black liquid liner over the top once more to straighten out the line. This step is also tricky and you’ll likely get liner over your false lashes.
Just focus on lining your lids and gently dab off any stray product on your lashes later.

—-
Step 5: When you have the strip down, press firmly so it adheres. Then gently push the inner half of the lash strips downwards, so the outer halves flip out and up slightly, to give a cat-eye effect. Finish with pale yellow or white liner along the water line, and mascara along the bottom lashes.
