Revisiting: The Creamy Salmon-Pink Lip

Want a color that pretty enough for Spring, but still bright enough that it’s not a wishy-washy pastel?

This is something that showed up on the catwalks about 2 years back, but is still gorgeous today. You take any fuchsia pink or coral you have, and you mix it with a flesh-toned concealer shade. What you get is a highly-pigmented salmon-pink (fuchsia lipstick) or milky-peach (coral lipstick) that takes on a bright pastel hue and really pops against your skin.

Perfect on a sunny day OR as an alternative to the usual nude lip with smoky eyes!

[CLOSED] Calling All Malibu Barbies! (300,000 Follower Makeup Giveaway Part 1 of 3)

I’m delighted to announce that the 2nd part of the 300,000 Follower giveaway includes not one, not two… but THREE themed sets of Lime Crime makeup products! Each themed set contains completely different products and will create different looks.

I’d also like to thank the amazing team (and shout out to Cassie) for the incredible generosity and actually letting me put together sets of items for the giveaway.

Without further ado, here’s the first themed set…

The Malibu Barbie kit!

So what if you don’t have platinum blonde locks, a wasp waste and a caramel-colored tan? You can still channel a little Barbie-style. The Malibu Barbie kit includes the following 3 items:

Reason Uniliner: I picked Reason because unlike most silver liners, it is actually made up of very fine little silver flecks so you have the option of both wearing it in a concentrated line or sheering it out like a sparkly cream/liquid shadow. (Tutorial here.) Perfect foil for bright pink lips when you want to go over the top!

Great Pink Planet (link to demo for lipstick and powder-pigment heart below): I’ve used and repurchased this baby-pink lipstick multiple times. It is like an ever-so-slightly warmer version of MAC’s Saint Germain (some people consider it an exact dupe, but while it looks very close once on the lips, Saint Germain is a touch more cool-toned). Goes on creamy and sets to more of a satin finish. Pale lipsticks can accentuate flakes and cracks though, so make sure your lips are well-conditioned.

Countessa Fluorescent (below): Highlighter pink. If you know what MAC’s Candy Yum Yum or Barry M Shocking Pink looks like, this is similarly bright but more of a straight neon pink instead of magenta. Absolutely, ridiculously fun, this is another of those traffic-stopping pinks that no self-respecting Barbie would be without! (Does leave a pink stain on the lips after wearing, due to the pigments used.)

Requested: Updated Favorite Hot Pink Matte Lipsticks!

Who says you need to wait for Summer to pull out the bright pinks? Brands like Chanel have already pulled out the show-stoppers with bright matte pinks.

Here are 4 options I love, from a warm primrose to an electric neon pink:

  • Primrose (pink with a coral hue): Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited in Evil Pink (love that name!)
  • Fuchsia (pink with a bright red tint): Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in 996 Don’t Blink Pink
  • Magenta (pink with a purple undertone): NYX Matte Lipstick in Sweet Pink
  • Neon pink (pink that’s, well - neon): Barry M Lip Paint in 52 Shocking Pink
You’ve probably seen me wear these shades before, so it’s really nothing new. But while there are equals (MAC Candy Yum Yum = Barry M Shocking Pink, and Chanel’s new Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Eclatante is a slightly less intense Evil Pink), few will outclass these in intensity.

10 MAC Lipsticks Worth Checking Out

This is a bare-bones, no-frills recommendation of 10 different MAC shades for every lipstick newbie.

These are by no means the only great shades in MAC! I picked them in consideration of whether they were relatively unique to the brand and not that easily duped. They also might not flatter every person equally, so definitely test them out at the store and use this list more as a reference/suggestion to the types of colors and textures to look out for when you’re at the MAC counter.

Roses, Pinks and Nudes

Rebel - deep semi-sheer berry creme

Rebel looks scarily dark in the tube but actually goes on sheer and creamy, and not nearly as bruised/purple-looking as it seems. This is very flattering on most skin tones, but much more dramatic on the very pale.

Pink Nouveau - bright satin pastel pink

This classic pink has an impressive fan-list (Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj). If you want a sort of cool-toned, semi-matte bright pink that isn’t going to look too Snooki on, try Pink Nouveau. Looks fantastic on very pale and dark skins.

Saint Germain - pale blue pink creme

Super pale, super bright… this lipstick contains so much white pigments that it literally jumps off your face even if you’re really pale. ONLY for drama queens. It’s not going to look good on everyone so try before you buy!

Pink Plaid - matte blush-beige

If you want a kittenish pout but matte nudes make you look like a corpse, get something that’s a little more pink/peach. Pink Plaid is just that sort of muted lip color with a hint of flattering color.

Creme Cup - creamy, semi-sheer blush-beige

Sort of like Pink Plaid but sheer, and a touch more beige. Very easy to wear with any smoky eye, and low-maintenance enough that you can slick it on without a lot of liner, primer, etc.

Purples and Reds

Up The Amp - Soft medium mauve/purple creme

This unique color is so different from most shades around but it’s amazingly flattering on many skin tones. If you’re porcelain skinned it could look a little goth/punk though, so test first. Fab on medium to dark skins.

Prince Noir / Diva - Dark plum / Dark liver-red (both matte)

It’s tied between these 2 shades, but I seem to have misplaced my Diva so I can’t swatch it. Prince Noir is more dramatic, and Diva is more of a classy dark red. I personally find Diva more wearable, which is a good thing since it’s available at regular MAC stores.

Ruby Woo - Retro-matte scarlet

The reddest red there is. This red is so intense it makes Russian Red look like brick-red. The texture is not the most comfortable for some people since it’s even dryer than regular matte lipsticks, but then Ruby Woo gives a uniqely uber-matte effect combined with super-saturated color that is really hard to duplicate conveniently, it as my default scarlet.

Impassioned - Fuschia-coral creme

If coral is too yellow for you and fuchsia is too blue, get Impassioned, which is the perfect cross between the two, and just as bright. It IS rather flattering and I recommend wearing it with minimal makeup on the rest of your face just to let your lips speak for themselves.

Morange - Bright acidic orange

This is a take-no-prisoners orange. Not quite a traffic-cone orange since it has just a bit more red thrown in, but that’s also what makes it more wearable. If you have darker skin and want a similar effect, try Lady Danger, which is a bit deeper and redder. Be prepared to be stared at when you wear this.

Fun Color Combinations for Lips and Nails this Summer

I’m liking combinations of color that mix a bit of contrast with a bit of complementary tones. (E.g. bright pink with a pale lemon-yellow, or an acidic orange with a very white pink).

What sort of color combinations have you been liking? Matchy-matchy or full-on contrast?

2 Hot Drugstore Lipsticks for Spring/Summer: Review and Swatches for Milani Mango Mambo and Rose Hip

—-

Color Perfect Lipsticks

One of their star products are the Color Perfect Lipsticks, which are silky, richly-pigmented, and come in trendy colors (like Mango Mambo and Rose Hip). If you are interested in getting 2012’s hottest color, Tangerine, or the ever-popular Hot Pink, but find yourself on a tight budget, Milani is one of your best bets.

—-

Overall texture

These are a cross between MAC Lustres and Amplified Cremes. They are not as highly-pigmented as Amplified Cremes, so you will need to apply a couple of coats to build up the color, but they aren’t as slick and sheer as Lustres.

One thing I noticed was that bright shades like Mango Mambo and Rose Hip aren’t totally color-true when applied. They go on more translucent and darker, until you build it up to a few layers, so if you love strong pigmentation from the first swipe, these are not the lipsticks for that.

If your lips are very dark or pigmented, you may notice pigments settling into lines.

—-

Wear

This is a creamy lipstick, so you know it’s not going to stay through a greasy meal. I’d say it lasts through about 3-4 hours of normal wear (talking, drinking, etc) before you need a touch-up noticeably.

—-

Scent

Fruity-floral; quite strong. You might want to avoid if your skin is sensitive to fragrances in lip products.

—-

Shade Range:

The line has more than 40 shades so you’re likely to find something you like. Finding a single place with all 40+ swatches is almost impossible though, so you’ll need to Google Image each shade one by one most of the time.
