Lime Crime Uniliner Swatches and Tips!

The team at Lime Crime very kindly sent me a set of their brand-new, uber-bright Uniliners, so I’m swatching them here and throwing in a few tips on application if you happen to like matte, intense liquid liners as much as I do.

(To see a previous tutorial using a matte liquid/cake liner, click here!)

It’s easy to find liquid liners in neutral shades (black, brown, grey, navy), and metallic finishes, but much less common to get hold of them in matte, BRIGHT shades, hence my previous post raving about the colors in this range.

Swatches (L-to-R): Lunar White (liquid-paper white), 6th Element (true orange), Citreuse (lime), Blue Milk (baby-blue), Lazuli (cobalt), Orchidaceous (bright violet) and Quill (straight black)

The Good News:

These do go on the way they look in images and swatches. I’m actually surprised by just how nice the paler shades are; particularly Blue Milk and Citreuse. They look like they might have a bit of shimmer in the tubes, but go on matte.

These come with long-ish, fine brush tips, so you can get maximum intensity (as compared to felt tips which tend to deposit less product.

The colors are actually quite wearable in real life despite how bright they look in images. They also don’t smear off when rubbed, and don’t crack after drying, unless you really coat on layer after layer.

The Bad News?

They’re a good bit smaller than they look in pictures (1.3ml or 0.04 oz as compared to the typical 2ml or so in the average liquid liner). This isn’t too much of a problem in the sense that most liquid liners dry out before they’re finished, but at $13.99, bear in mind that these are definitely higher-end.

The fact that they come with a fine brush also means they might not be the best option for liquid-liner novices or those with shaky hands.

Tips for Use

  1. Instead of trying to apply your liner in one single stroke, you’ll get more control and a more intense line if you apply it in sections. Center, outer, and then inner corners when you have the least amount of liquid left on your brush.
  2. Take care not to apply too many coats of liner or your liner will crease and crack after drying.
  3. If you’re going to do what I do and stack liners (black and lime shown here), apply the paler color first in a thick swatch along or close to your lash line. THEN apply the darker or black shade thinly along the base. Doing it the other way round (black first then colored) would be a whole lot messier and harder to control.
  4. Arm yourself with Q-tips and a disposable mascara brush. All that liquid liner that you get on places like your skin and your lashes is going to show up instantly. After applying, clean up any smudges with the the Q-tip or by briskly running the mascara wand through your lashes.
  5. You can wear it neat without shadow, but always add a little dark color around the lashes or wear tons of mascara. Your lash line can disappear otherwise.
  6. Wearing a full strip along the entire upper lash line creates the optical illusion of a smaller but more defined double-lid
  7. If you have a very steady hand, wear it along your lower lash line!
  8. These, like most liquid liners, are made to last. They won’t come off properly with just soap and water. Use a makeup remover.
  9. Apply it thick over the entire lid and gently smooth out with your finger tip for a dramatic eye shadow look!

Mattes (L-to-R): Revlon Matte Kohl Eyeliner in 05 Very Violet, Make Up Store Vanilla matte pencil,  Revlon Matte Kohl  Eyeliner in 04 Pure White, The Body Shop Special Edition Kajal Eyeliner #01

Revlon Matte Kohls are great because they are so strong and opaque, but creamy enough to apply without tugging too much on your skin. I like Very Violet along the upper lash line in a colorful kitten flick because it’s deep and matte enough for good definition, but you still get strong color. Pure White can be used along the waterline. Note that matte whites tend to work better and stay stronger than pearly ones, which sheer out easily, and will not survive the water line.
Make Up Store’s Vanilla matte pencil is my absolute favorite pencil. I haven’t been able to find a similar matte pale yellow-beige shade from other brands. This is the best possible color for the water line when you want to brighten and widen, without the harshness of white pencil. TIP: I also use it on any dark spots or marks that need some precision concealing.
The Body Shop Special Edition Kajal: I liked the creaminess and the twist up tube enough to buy a backup but there are plenty of great black pencils out there, MAC Smolder being one of them. This just happens to be one I enjoy and have on hand.

Metallic liners (L-to-R): Sephora Flashy Liner in 07 Flashy Copper, Bourjois Metallise in 52 Brun Inoxydable, Bourjois Metallise in 54 Bleu Clinquant, Silkygirl Funky Eyelights in 02 Ocean Blue, MAC Eye Kohl in Rosemary & Thyme, and Bourjois Metallise in 87 Vert Eclatant

I don’t use my metallic liners as much as I should, but I’m not funky enough to wear these all the time. Liners DO need touching up over the course of the day, ESPECIALLY along the lower lash line and water line, and these are where I tend to apply my metallics.
NOTE: Most pale liners do wipe off much easier than the darker ones.
—-
Bourjois Regard Effet Metallise: Great range of shades and great silky textures. These make fantastic eyeshadow bases, and come in some amazingly strong and bright shades that stay true to color when applied. (Some pencils go on duller and sheerer than they appear.)
Sephora Flashy Liners: I did not get many shades as I already have a big collection of Bourjois ones, but I do find these very comparable to Bourjois. Flashy Copper is obviously my favorite, but I prefer it over the lids, as it can make your eyes look swollen when worn close at the water line. (It’s closer to skin shade for me.)
Silkygirl: This is a drugstore brand available in Southeast Asia. It’s cheaper than the usual brands like Revlon and Bourjois, but the quality isn’t entirely on par. They go on less opaque and less evenly than some other brands. Still, Ocean Blue is a lovely steel-blue leaning towards indigo that I love to wear along the lower lash line, with just a neutral wash of beige-brown on the lids. You just need to re-apply every few hours to keep the color strong.
MAC Eye Kohls used to be the only brand of colored liners I owned, but I don’t find them to be as metallic and strong in color as other brands, although they are “smokier” in tone. There are still some great shades and if you are shy of color, these are a better way to acclimatize yourself first. Draw along the lash line and smudge with a finger for a hint of smoky definition without too much color.

Sam was introducing Make Up For Ever’s new Aqua Liners, and did a very simple, colorful, duo-toned liner look. I liked how the darker liner toned down the look and provided some definition to the eye area, unlike when you just apply a light metallic liner on its own.
If you don’t have many colorful liquid liners or find liquid liners hard to use, here’s a slight re-interpretation using a pencil and an eye shadow.
You can use any color groups you want (e.g. pale pink and fuschia, gold and brown, pale blue and navy…), but the key is to use a paler metallic shade as the main color block, and a darker shade as outline. A word of caution: If you use two contrasting shades (green and purple for example) for this particular look, it will turn out muddy from a distance as you will not be able to see either color very well, so that’s not recommended.
Products used:
Bourjois Contour Clubbing Liner #44 Golden Grey Session (it’s actually a pale minty gold-lime)
POP Beauty Smoky Eyes palette (only teal green shadow in the clutch)
L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara
—-
Step 1: Apply a thick swatch of colorful liner on the upper lash line, extending beyond the outer corners into a subtle wing. I chose a pencil because you don’t need to worry about precision at this point (pencils don’t tend to give very clean outlines). Only the outline color needs precise application.
If you need to run it over your lash line 2 or 3 times to get full intensity, do so.

—-
Step 2: This is the slightly harder step. I suggest using an angled liner brush, rather than a thin pointy one (aka liquid liner brushes) or flat square brushes. Note that the bristles need to be really flat, so an angled brow brush will NOT work. Sephora has a really good one.
Apply a strip of darker metallic color OVER the pencil liner. *I mixed my powder shadow with eye drops.

Tip: It’s easier to get precise control at the outer ends, if you work your way INWARDS after placing the brush exactly where you want the flick to end.
—-
Step 3: Instead of outlining the pale liner and keeping things only on the upper lid, I did a bit of a double-wing and brought the deeper color downwards to the outer 1/3 of the lower lash line.

—-
Step 4: Apply mascara to finish off.

I decided to try out some tips for wearing colorful liner in the June 2011 issue of ALLURE magazine.
—-
Step 1: Instead of having totally bare lids, apply a soft matte or satin grey shade over the lids for some depth without taking attention away from the colorful liner.

—-
Step 2: Apply bright liner all around the eyes. I decided to do reverse lining (extend lower liner outwards at the ends).
***BEST TIP: To keep things more defined at the lash line, apply black liner along the water line first.

—-
Step 3: Apply false lashes or mascara.

—-
And that’s all there is!
