«The Body Shop Deerlicious Fuchsia»

Firstly, the Body Shop launched the Leona Lewis collection, which I do think not only has fab packaging, but also has plenty of items that would work great on women of color.

Day-Glow: Bright Spring Pastel Makeup (Easily transforms into a dramatic look!)

I’m a fan of pairing opalescent green lids with bright pink. For Spring/Summer, it’s one of those color combinations that’s fab-and-fresh and goes with so many skin-tones.

The same bright eyes and cheeks works with an almost neon coral-pink lip that I’m in love with, carries surprisingly well into the night if you like uber-dark Noir lips (another FANTASTIC lipstick to introduce today) but don’t want that wintry, monochromatic face.

Romantic Lavender (For anyone desperate for one more last-minute Valentine’s idea!)

Lavender is a universally-flattering color for most eye and skin colors, and I always consider it one of those shades that functions like a neutral because it goes with everything and everyone. A pearlescent lavender eye like this one can look sultry and dreamy at the same time (as seen on Jessica Rabbit) if you don’t go overboard with the contouring, AND you’ll see you can transform the entire look just by switching out your lip color.

Some tips:

  • What you want to be careful of, if you have uneven skin tone or a lot of red/pink in your skin, is to pick purples that lean more silver or blue.
  • If you have mature lids, go with slightly less metallic/shimmery shadows than I used because a high-sheen can emphasize lines.
  • If you have very dark skin, pick a purple that is richer and stronger as a soft pastel can look chalky
  • If you are layering it over a grey/silver base like I did here (See below), remember that you need to go with a slightly more pink-toned shade than you want because the blue undertones in the grey base will make a purple look blue. You can skip the base, but you lose some of that soft, hazy effect.

How to Wear Plum Lipstick, plus L’oreal Color Riche Intense Plum Demo!

Plum is an odd cross between purple, brown AND red. It has the ability to look very goth OR very posh and chic depending on your outfit and the rest of your makeup.

If you’re looking for some good options, you’ll be happy to know drugstore brands do carry good versions of this shade. The one I’m working with today is L’oreal’s Color Riche in Intense Plum because it goes on evenly (some are patchy), comes in a creme formula (some people don’t like mattes because they’re very drying) and is not too dark or light so it works for most skin colors.

10 MAC Lipsticks Worth Checking Out

This is a bare-bones, no-frills recommendation of 10 different MAC shades for every lipstick newbie.

These are by no means the only great shades in MAC! I picked them in consideration of whether they were relatively unique to the brand and not that easily duped. They also might not flatter every person equally, so definitely test them out at the store and use this list more as a reference/suggestion to the types of colors and textures to look out for when you’re at the MAC counter.

Roses, Pinks and Nudes

Rebel - deep semi-sheer berry creme

Rebel looks scarily dark in the tube but actually goes on sheer and creamy, and not nearly as bruised/purple-looking as it seems. This is very flattering on most skin tones, but much more dramatic on the very pale.

Pink Nouveau - bright satin pastel pink

This classic pink has an impressive fan-list (Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj). If you want a sort of cool-toned, semi-matte bright pink that isn’t going to look too Snooki on, try Pink Nouveau. Looks fantastic on very pale and dark skins.

Saint Germain - pale blue pink creme

Super pale, super bright… this lipstick contains so much white pigments that it literally jumps off your face even if you’re really pale. ONLY for drama queens. It’s not going to look good on everyone so try before you buy!

Pink Plaid - matte blush-beige

If you want a kittenish pout but matte nudes make you look like a corpse, get something that’s a little more pink/peach. Pink Plaid is just that sort of muted lip color with a hint of flattering color.

Creme Cup - creamy, semi-sheer blush-beige

Sort of like Pink Plaid but sheer, and a touch more beige. Very easy to wear with any smoky eye, and low-maintenance enough that you can slick it on without a lot of liner, primer, etc.

Purples and Reds

Up The Amp - Soft medium mauve/purple creme

This unique color is so different from most shades around but it’s amazingly flattering on many skin tones. If you’re porcelain skinned it could look a little goth/punk though, so test first. Fab on medium to dark skins.

Prince Noir / Diva - Dark plum / Dark liver-red (both matte)

It’s tied between these 2 shades, but I seem to have misplaced my Diva so I can’t swatch it. Prince Noir is more dramatic, and Diva is more of a classy dark red. I personally find Diva more wearable, which is a good thing since it’s available at regular MAC stores.

Ruby Woo - Retro-matte scarlet

The reddest red there is. This red is so intense it makes Russian Red look like brick-red. The texture is not the most comfortable for some people since it’s even dryer than regular matte lipsticks, but then Ruby Woo gives a uniqely uber-matte effect combined with super-saturated color that is really hard to duplicate conveniently, it as my default scarlet.

Impassioned - Fuschia-coral creme

If coral is too yellow for you and fuchsia is too blue, get Impassioned, which is the perfect cross between the two, and just as bright. It IS rather flattering and I recommend wearing it with minimal makeup on the rest of your face just to let your lips speak for themselves.

Morange - Bright acidic orange

This is a take-no-prisoners orange. Not quite a traffic-cone orange since it has just a bit more red thrown in, but that’s also what makes it more wearable. If you have darker skin and want a similar effect, try Lady Danger, which is a bit deeper and redder. Be prepared to be stared at when you wear this.

Fall/Winter 2012 Trends: Mulberry Lips and Winged Black Eyes

A recap of 2 of the key trends for this year; plum lips with a clean face and clumpy mascara (especially love the Gucci “Mulberry” lip paired with bleached brows) or black winged eyes, worn both smoky and graphic.

Mulberry Lips

If you’re looking for a lipstick, look for something that seems to be right in the cross-roads of red and black. It shouldn’t lean too brown or too purple.

The texture varies (matte, creamy, glossy, metallic) but the application is always extremely precise. If you don’t have a steady head, definitely use a dark lip liner and lip brush to apply.

One other great way to get a very precise lip is to rub some concealer or foundation around the edges of your lips before you apply your liner or lipstick. The skin around our lip lines are sometimes a little discolored, so this helps to mask that.

Some makeup artists also take it to the extremes by using a very small brush to paint a little foundation AROUND the lip line after applying lipstick. Definitely make sure you don’t leave a visible beige ring around your mouth if you try this!

Wear mulberry lips with a clean face (i.e. minimal eye makeup and no obvious blush; just some contouring if you need).

Winged Eyes

Most winged eyes are done with a matte charcoal or black shadow packed on really intensely onto the entire lid, but applied only up to the socket line; no further. Most looks are winged outward slightly at the outer corners for a cat-like effect.

Black on the lower lid is optional.

If you want some color, you can pop a little shimmery shadow over the inner corners of the eye where it will look duochrome without changing the overall look and shape.

For the lips to pair with this, anything goes but the preference is for a bright red or a dark vampy plum once again.
