Fun with Magenta Glitter
—
You probably know I have a problem resisting hot pinks and magentas. The funny thing is, I started out hating pink, and when I started wearing or buying pink, it was sort of a lark or a personal joke many years back.
Irony of ironies, huh?
ANYWAY - the next in my glitter series was a magenta glitter (Sagittarius) with a blue/green sheen, so I couldn’t resist packing that all over the mouth for a deep, but dramatically bright sparkle.

When it comes to glitter on the lips, this is where I feel you have the option of going for larger particle sizes which might not be as safe for the eye area. The bigger the particle size, the more dramatic from afar and in flash photography. The smaller the particles, the more you get a dramatic “wet” look that doesn’t kiss off. (Large particle sizes don’t tend to look that good close-up though, and they feel a lot rougher, so avoid these if you have sensitive lips.)
The base I used was a strong purple-toned mauve; MAC’s delicious Up The Amp lipstick. It’s a BEAUTIFUL color. Works on mostly fair-gold to dark skins. (This thing is hot-hot-hot on black women, I kid you not.) If you are extremely fair with flushed skin or have a lot of pink undertones, you might want to try Snob or Revlon’s Pink Pout instead as Up The Amp might look a little too dusky on you.
—

Step 1: MAC Up the Amp. On the lips. Period. Get a thick coat on because you want a good base to hold the glitter.
—

Step 2: Using a flat synthetic brush (ecotools has a great concealer brush that I always use for working with glitter because it’s big enough to cover more space, but not too big for some precision), pick up some glitter on just one side of the brush and gently coat the lip surface bit by bit.
You don’t want to pick up glitter on both sides of the brush simply because it will fall out all over your chin while you are using one side. (If that’s the look you’re going for, don’t let me stop you! ;P)
—

Step 3: When you are done covering the entire lip, you want to go around the edges of your mouth with a damp Q-tip to pick up any stray glitters. The outer corners of the lower lip are the usual problem spots where you’ve gone over with the brush, or some glitter has fallen loose and shifted.
The more precise your mouth, the more dramatic the look.

Note on eating and drinking with a glitter lip:
Glitter lips actually stay on pretty darned well. The coating of plastic or minerals actually hangs on to your lipstick and stops it from kissing off as much as usual. You should be safe if you are a little careful  when you drink (nobody I know munches their cups and glasses).
When it comes to food though, because it involves a lot more friction, you will have a tendency to smear glitter off the center of your lips.
If you’re going to a cocktail party where there’s just some bite-sized pieces of finger food that don’t require any tearing/chewing before you can get them into your mouth, you’ll be pretty safe. Not recommended if you’re eating burgers and pizza! A few flecks of glitter never killed anyone, but you don’t really want to ingest any of it if you can help it.

Merry Xmas with a Sparkly Coral Kiss! (Coral “Aries” Glitter demo)

FUN, FUN, FUN and insanely bright! Image taken with flash photography, using MAC Force of Love lipstick and Lime Crime Aries glitter.
I was initially going to do a pure-swatch post for all 13 of the Lime Crime Zodiac Glitters, but figured it might be more fun to actually show you what I’d use each type of glitter shade for.
A note on buying Cosmetic-Grade glitters
Let me first state that these glitters were sent for review. Buying cosmetic grade glitters from makeup brands can be very expensive (upwards of $12-20 for a small jar; MAC being the most affordable comparing weight vs price, and Make Up For Ever the most expensive, with Lime Crime in-between), and they’re not something I recommend for regular use.

I tend to purchase my glitters from glitter distributors and wholesalers like TKBtrading or Coastalscents.com. That said, they don’t always have all the funky shades, and if you are only using a bit each time on special occasions, don’t want to fool around with messy bags, or checking which ones are cosmetic-grade (i.e. fine enough to be eye-safe and non-bleeding in sealants and solvents), then brands like MAC, Lime Crime and Make Up For Ever do offer some nice (but pricey) options in more convenient packaging.
Art and nail supply stores sometimes do have micro-glitters as well, so definitely check there and see if they have more affordable alternatives. Just be careful not to use them in the eye area if they aren’t super fine. For the lips, they might feel less comfortable but they’re fine otherwise.

Quick fun side-note on Astrology and signs:
I’m not big on Astrology, but I remember an Astrologer friend once told me that our personalities aren’t dictated by our birth signs but a “moon” sign. (If I got the name/term wrong, forgive me!) So as an example, while I’m born an Aries, my moon is in Libra, and I actually behave like a Libran.

For the Lip Look today the colorful glitter I’m using today is none other than the first of the zodiac sign; Aries! This is a pinky-coral glitter with bright green and gold duochrome flash. Of course, to get the most dramatic effect, I had to pick a neon-pastel coral pink like MAC’s Force of Love. Mac Viva Glam Nicki is very similar but slightly creamier. Both shades will pop in flash photography because of the neon color pigments in them!

Swatch above was created using just glitter and a little petroleum jelly, so I would not change the color in any way with a colored base.
—

Step 1: First apply a super-bright coral pink. No special prep and no lip liner.
—

Step 2: Next using a synthetic concealer brush, I picked up the glitter and gently pressed it over the lip surface. Don’t rub it around because you don’t want the lipstick to end up coating the surface of the glitter particles and turn everything dull. I covered the entire top lip, but kept only to the middle portions of the lower lip for a dimension when the head is turned.
That’s it!

A note on Aries glitter (or coral glitter in general):
The fastest way to bring out colored glitter is to use a base or shadow that is a similar color to it. But being a translucent coral shade, a neutral or black base (if you wear it on the eyes) would mask the nice coral base-tone and only bring out the green and gold reflections, so it’s a bit of a waste to wear it that way.
Over coral lips though, this type of glitter shade is fantastic, because it won’t change the color of your lipstick OR show up as obvious dark flecks, and the lip color plays up its coral tones beautifully. You’ll get to see both the highlight shades (green and gold), as well as the base color.

Lavender Sparkle “Stick-On” Lips
—-
I applied a layer of pale lilac lipstick (D’Lilac) to the lips, and then used a flat shadow brush to press a lavender glitter all over the lips.
This is all nice and fun, but it’s probably not a good idea to go for dinner unless you want to swallow a lot of glitter. The lasting power, however, is really good, so if you need to make a statement for a few hours, this does not kiss off and requires pretty much no touch-up at all.
Tips for wearing glitter lips:
Pick a lipstick that is close to the shade of the glitter for best effect
Micro-glitter is easier to apply in an even layer and more comfortable to wear, but it will not be quite as dramatic and sparkly as larger flecks. The good news is that unlike the eye area, you can choose larger-sized art-store glitters for lips.
If you pick a pale color, do apply a little flesh colored lip primer or concealer around the edges of the lips so you get an even tone there
Good Colors to try:

Red on red
Pink on Pink
Black on Black
Aqua on Aqua
Of course, you can also do this easily with Violent Lips, but I’m not sure about paying that amount of money for 3 sheets of temporary lip tattoos. (What if I make a mistake???)
