Makeupbox Beauty Q&A (April-May 2013)

Do you have naked 1 or 2?i want to buy 1 eyeshadow palette only. What would you recommend me?how about the vice palette?thx b4!

I don’t own either of the Naked palettes because I have so many shadows already!! But I personally prefer Naked 1 because it gives the option of doing slightly smokier looks. Naked 2 is mostly softer and lighter colors, and good if you never wear darker eyes. Vice palette is fun if you like to wear very out-there and dramatic colors on a daily basis. Otherwise it’s better to start out with a more neutral palette like the Naked 1 or 2!

Hi there! I recently bought Skin79’s Super BB cream, but when I apply it and its had adequate amount of time to dry and adjust to my skin tone, my face ends up looking greyish. I was wondering what I could do/use to combat the grey? I don’t want throw away a perfectly good bottle of BB cream! I also don’t know of anyone who wants it either. Any tips/advice would be great! x .. (ps. huge fan of your blog! I check for new posts religiously! :)

Sounds like your skin is a lot more pigmented or tanned than the BB cream can adjust to match! Many Asian BB creams darken slightly upon oxidizing, but aren’t like those color-adjusting tinted moisturizers that match most skin tones. What I do when I get a BB cream whose color is just too far off to wear all over:

"Beauty Q&A: 26 March 2013 (Liquid Liners, highlighters, brushes, my camera, and peeling skin!)"

What is a good, fairly cheap highlighter? Liquid, cream or powder I dont mind. I just want to find something that will give a nice glow to my cheekbones but isnt too expensive. Is the benefit highbeam good? I was looking for something slightly cheaper.. thanks

There is always MAC’s Strobe cream! I find you get so little product with highbeam, though it’s a very good product, and for women of color, you need something a little less silvery for highlights.

The other cheap trick is to find a loose powder shadow in a soft peachy-pink or champagne shade and just add that to a lotion to make your own! As long as you don’t choose a shadow that is glitter or sparkly, it should look great.

do you have a youtube channel?

No, I’m afraid not! But I’ll definitely do it if time and situation allows in future!

hello there. just wanna ask what are the essential brushes (and where to use them) and sponges we need to invest in? how to clean them and when to change them? i saw in your recent post u used concealer brush on your lip, i have the same brush which i used to apply eye shadow. i use to apply concealer and make up base using fingertips. well i really wanna learn about these brushes. thank you so much!

[Requested] Basic, Polished Brow Tutorial (tips, techniques, and choosing the right products and colors)

One more request for brow grooming.

Disclaimer: Now there are different ways of doing brows, and this isn’t the only way. You can also choose to do:

  • dramatic, thick, strong brows (40s- 50s bombshell brows and boyish brows)
  • super thin and dramatically arched (20s-30s flapper brows and theatrical/drag brows)

The one I’m doing today is just a regular polished brow and the basic guidelines apply to ALL brow shapes no matter how thick or sparse yours are:

  • Trimming/plucking for a neat appearance, without altering your natural brow shape too obviously
  • Filling in sparse or patchy areas for a slightly fuller look
  • Grooming the hairs so they look and stay neatly combed rather than pointing in all different directions

"Beauty FAQs (12 March 2013): Eyeshadow for your eye color, working with pale shadow, blush tips, skincare, and what makeup I wear in daily life!"

How do (or do you) use all of the very light colors in something like the 88 warm palette? Aside from regular brow and highlight colors, I wasn’t sure if you had some more creative uses :) thanks! Your blog is absolutely the best.

Thank you! That’s a problem I have with the palette as well! There are just too many of them and they’re all so similar.

I’m sure you already know to use them on your brow-bone, the inner corner of your eyes and down the center of your eyes for looks.

The other way you can try to use them up (if you are quite light-skinned) is to use a big brush, pick up a mixture of a few shades, and then use that as a cheek highlight. The less shimmery shades would also work around the edge of your the cupid’s bow to make your lips fuller looking.

But other than this, I really don’t have that much use for them either LOL!

how do you get such clear skin?

I have normal/combination skin that tends to be oilier around the nose, inner cheeks, and chin, and here’s a current routine. But then I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that I’m 31 and my skin’s started to calm down a lot (in the oil department) compared to my younger years.

Some ground-rules I established over the years:

Coral Lipsticks: Shades, Swatches, Tips!

Coral is that hybrid shade that is not quite orange, not quite red. Some even have a shot of pink and peach thrown in. Read down further for brands and details of the swatches listed!

It can be a hard shade to wear if you don’t take care to even out your skin tone with a good base or concealer first (it can make blotchy skin blotchier) or a little matching blush on the cheeks (it can make medium to dark skins sallow-looking).

But get your base covered and coral is its own statement and does not need much eye makeup accompanying it. (Interestingly, all the beautiful looks I found featuring coral lips had MINIMAL eye makeup.)

P.S. Thanks to all of you for chipping in with your favorite corals! More, more! We need to know where all the good stuff is!
