Black and Copper Smoke Eyeshadow Tutorial

This is a very simple rounded smoky eye quite reminiscent of the retro 20’s shape, but with the contrast of  high-sheen metallic as a color-accent. This is good for most eye shapes, but is a very strong and dramatic look.

Because of the very intense black rimming and circling the eyes, it will bring out all eye colors, but especially blue and lighter browns because of the copper on the lids.

You will need:

  1. Black pencil or kajal
  2. A matte black shadow
  3. A metallic copper or bronze shadow (I used MAC Metal pigment in Copper; you can try any copper you have; there are many options in the drugstore, or you can try MAC Coppering and Coastal Scents Hot Pot in Copper Pot as well.)
  4. Wispy false lashes (I used Ardell 122s)

"Hi, I would like to purchase some coppery / bronzy / reddish shadows. I'm on a budget and can't decide between Coastal Scents Fall Festival Palette (for the Raisin Berry, Bright Copper and American Rose) and NYX trio copper/rust/bronze + red bean pie single shadow. What do you recommend ? I would like something in the spirit of MAC's Coppering, Cranberry and Antiqued. Thanks (your blog is great <3 )"

Hmm that’s a tough call because both are great options in terms of cost and quality!

If you want bang for the buck, the Coastal Scents Fall Festival one would be the one to go with because you get 12 shadows, including shades like navy, browns, olive, beige, etc.

In terms of texture, I’ve also found the Coastal Scents Metallic/Shimmer hot pots to be generally very good in terms of not having as much fall-out as the NYX shadows, which can be a bit softer and more powdery.

But if you’re really not going to be wearing the other colors, and just want shades as close to the 3 MAC shades you listed as possible, the NYX one is a better option because none of the shades in the Fall Festival palette are really dupes (though I LOVE ME15; it’s gorgeous).

Dupe list:

  • MAC Cranberry: NYX Rust is spot-on
  • MAC Coppering: NYX Copper is a pretty good match
  • MAC Antiqued: NYX Walnut (single) is a better match than Red Bean Pie, which is a lot more plum-toned and more like a darker Star Violet.
