Coastal Scents Blue-Red Chrome Mica: MAC Cornflower Pigment Dupe?

As you can see from the swatches, not really. BUT if you’ve ever wished that MAC’s Cornflower was a little stronger, finer-grained, and looked as duochrome on the lid as it does in the bottle, then this actually performs better for a whole lot less money. ($1 per sample bag to be exact.)

The only thing you need to watch out for is to wear a good base or primer on your lids, because pure micas don’t stick very well and can fade or dust off quickly. This shade is no different.

Here’s a close-up of the 2 swatches over a clear base. (Both pigments don’t stick all that well.) As you can see, MAC Cornflower goes on blue with just the faintest trace of violet overtone, but once it’s swatched next to Blue-Red Chrome, it looks flat-out periwinkle blue. Blue-Red Chrome on the other hand, shifts very beautifully between blue and a mauve-violet. Over a dark base, the reddened violet tones come out stronger. Over skin tones, the smoky blue is more apparent.

For about $1 a sample baggie which will fill up a 5g jar easily, I would definitely recommend you pick this OVER the MAC pigment any day.

Step 1: I applied a dark blue pencil (MAC Blooz Kohl) along the lash line and diagonally up across the upper lid almost like a wing, but not extending much past the outer corners. This will serve as a dark base, which is ALWAYS a great way to bring out duochrome colors.

Step 2: Use your fingers to just lightly smudge and smoke the outer edges.

Step 3: Using a flat shadow brush so I can minimize fallout, I packed the pigment over the entire lid, from inner to outer corners, up to the socket line. Then I ran the brush along the lower lash line as well.

Step 4: Just curl lashes and apply mascara to finish!

Drugstore Dupes for MAC Eyeshadows (By easydiy)

MAC is one of the most loved and most used brands of makeup in the world, and as I’m making tutorials, even when I don’t use their shades, I sometimes feel a need to reference them (e.g. “if you don’t have this color, you can try something like MAC Antiqued” because I know most people around the world are able to access a MAC counter to take a look at the exact colors I’m talking about).

At the same time, I know sometimes it can get frustrating when everybody does tutorials and goes “MAC” this…  ”MAC” that…

If you love MAC colors but would rather not buy them, there are a lot of dupe videos around telling you where to get cheap drugstore alternatives - or drop the lemming you have for a particular color which you might already own a dupe for. Most of the videos are aimed at the an American audience with access to brands like Cover Girl and Wet n Wild and not other brands you have access to necessarily, so if you’re located in other parts of the world, keep that in mind when you watch and just note to yourself to explore your local brands and drugstores more!

Other than this, enjoy this vid!

MAC Lady Danger Dupe Request: NYX Matte Lipstick

—-

I got a question regarding what NYX lipstick would be a dupe for MAC’s Lady Danger. Well, I don’t know of any exact dupes currently, but intensity and shade-wise, this is the closest that I can find at the moment.

NYX Matte Lipstick in Pure Red.

It’s a creamy-matte which feels very comfortable on the lips, and is warmer and more orange than MAC Ruby Woo, which is why it’s quite close to Lady Danger (chili-red with an orange kick).

I swatched it next to NYX’s Indie Flick matte lipstick, because I added just a touch of Indie Flick to my lips for the actual 100% Lady Danger dupe. If you’re really on a budget and just want one lipstick, my money’s still on Pure Red, as Indie Flick is a brighter red-orange, more similar to MAC Morange.

P.S. Eye products worn:

  • Coastal Scents Hot Pot in Copper Pot on inner half of lids
  • 88 Original/Matte Palette soft purple on outer half of lids (the only purple in the blue row)
  • MAC Macroviolet Fluid Line along upper lashes (metallic plum/purple)
DIRTY NUDE! (Revlon Gray Suede)
—-
It suddenly struck me that the grey-beige MAC Hangin’ Loose polish totally reminded me of something that has been sitting around neglected on my shelves for the better part of a year.
Revlon’s diminutive Gray Suede polish.

The Revlon looks just a tad more cool toned, and has barely-discernible hints of shimmer, but so far it looks quite similar in depth and coloring.
I’m a fan of Revlon polishes and glosses most times, but I guess we’ll know if this is a worthy dupe once the collection is released!

About: TheBalm’s “Luminizer” (aka Mary-Lou Manizer, wateva…)

Unwieldy name aside, this is a lovely, LARGE compact of one of the most beautiful golden-ivory shades I’ve ever seen.

Reasons I love this:

1. It’s the most gorgeous pale-champagne shade with smooth-as-butter texture which is not glittery or chalky. It is able to mimic that translucent dewy look liquid or cream highlighters give, but is so much more portable and easier to work with. The shade is also flattering for most skin tones.

2. This is a pretty good dupe for MAC’s Retrospeck (which has slightly deeper base tones but identical highlights). As seen below, it is finer-grained and more opaque (Retrospeck is a Lustre) so while you won’t be able to get that same flecks-of-champagne effect, it’s easier to work with, more pigmented, and gives a very natural sheen when sheered out.

3. Look at the amount you get. Both products are marked up here in Asia, but you get 8.5g of product in The Luminizer (5 x MAC shadows at 1.5g), and an ever-so-cute mirrored compact, for about 0.5 times the cost of a MAC shadow.

Tips for applying:

  1. I swipe this on my brow bones and cheekbones with a wedge sponge after applying my base, and before doing the rest of my makeup. By the time my setting powder goes over it, it’s become a soft-focus highlighting sheen which emphasizes bone structure subtly.
  2. I sweep this over lids softly with black kitten liner. Apply red lipstick to complete the retro pin-up look.
  3. Dab this softly over the cupid’s bow, and in inner corners of eyes to enhance your features.
  4. If you have light to medium skin, mix a tiny bit of this with your normal powder on a fluffy brush and apply over under-eye concealer for more illumination. THEN apply the rest of your makeup. (Caution: It may be easy to go overboard with this, so be careful and use a very light hand!)
