Mermaid: Colored Smoky Eye (Navy, Teal, and Gold)

I was inspired by my new nail polish (ZOYA Crystal, seen on my nails here) to create a more dramatic, colorful smoky eye using very oceanic colors like deep blue, green and pale gold.

The central color for this look is blue.

Step 1: I packed a dark navy blue (MAC Flashtrack) into the outer and inner corners using a soft blender brush, going up only to the socket line.

Run along the entire lower lash line as well.

Step 2: Next, I applied a metallic teal (MAC Steamy) just inside the navy blue. Leave a strip of clear flesh right at the center.

On the lower lash line, dab the same shade right in the center (below).

Step 3: The final shade is a pale blonde-gold right in the center. I used Vanilla from the Urban Decay 15th Anniversary palette, which is an exact dupe for MAC’s Vanilla pigment and Coastal Scents Elven Gold Hot Pot.

I did not apply this shade along the lower lash line as that would make the eye look a little puffy and swollen there.

Step 4: I applied black kajal along my upper and lower waterlines, and then finished with black mascara.

Touch up the navy and teal if the color has faded by now.

MAC Tan Pigment and Flashtrack Shadow: Bronze and Navy Eye Makeup (for work)
—-
This was a super-simple eye that looks quite dressy without much effort.
I applied Flashtrack (deep navy Veluxe Pearl) to the outer halves of the lids, packing it in a more concentrated way around the socket line.
Then I applied Tan pigment (warm peachy-bronze) to the entire lid, blending into the navy.
I ran Flashtrack along the upper lash line lightly as a soft definer, using a flat angled brush, then applied mascara.
On the cheeks: MAC MSF in Medium Dark (contour) and MAC MSF in Porcelain Pink on cheeks (this was limited edition but you can use any pink/peach mineral blush for a similar effect)
On the lips: Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Strawberry Shortcake (this is one of my rare non-opaque lip days)

Side-note: I’m sorry I always take pictures while on conference calls… it’s the only time I can do it in the morning! LOL.

"Hi :) I always have slight troubles with the combination of eye-shadow/lipstick. As for my type, I have green eyes (with a brown splotch), reddish hair (darker shade of auburn, naturally darkbrown) and pale skin (no freckles). So, in this case, I always try to make ma eyes stand out more. I read that purple/violet compliments green eyes, and in fact it does, it just makes me look like a drug addict. And I'm tired of using grey/black since I only can use fair lip gloss. Do you have a tip? Thx :)"

Hi Valkyria, you can go for a navy blues (like MAC Deep Truth) or russet browns (slightly reddened) like MAC Antiqued or Cranberry on the lids. These would really bring out green eyes, but aren’t really purple, so they won’t look so much like bruises or dark shadows.

General Tips:

1. Make sure you wear some black at the lash line, whether it’s mascara or liner. This can really stop your shadows from looking like part of your skin color, which is the reason some shades like browns, reds and purples can look like bruises.

2. Make sure you even out the skin around your eyes with concealer or a matte beige shadow. This means the brow bone, the inner and outer corners of eyes where there tend to be discolorations or shadows, and of course, below your eyes.

The other alternative is (like you mentioned) purple. But, if violets or purples don’t look right, you might be going for shades that are too dark all round. Add a brighter or more pastel purple to the inner third of your lids to instantly brighten up your eye area without turning it into a light eye look.

Just make sure you define the lash line with black liner and mascara as well.

If not, you can also wear a deep purple metallic liner rather than purple eye shadow.

Lastly, try a dark green eye shadow. It’s not always true that you should avoid wearing greens if you have green eyes. You just have to choose a slightly darker or less vibrant shade than your eyes.

Easy Weekend Eye: Pink-Violet Duochrome [MAC Stars n Rockets and Flashtrack shadows]

Pink and Purple are right up there in many “Favorites” lists when it comes to makeup colors. But what about Purple-in-Pink?
This look features a bright magenta pink with a violet-blue duochrome shift. I’m not sure about you but I find this color to be just a little too dramatic and reminiscent of the 80’s on most days, so I seldom touch it. But when you temper it with a little blue and black at the lash lines, and heaps of blending, the overall effect can be quite modern and smoldering even.
I used an old mica from I Nuovi called Amethyst (I believe they discontinued this in their Dust collection), but this is not a hard color to find. Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow in Fishnet and MAC Stars n Rockets are pretty much identical to this.
The other 2 key componenets to this look are a strong, creamy black kohl or kajal, and navy blue shadow (I used MAC Flashtrack but any shimmery deep navy will do equally well.
—-
Step 1: Apply the black gel or kohl liner (I used The Body Shops’ Special Edition Kajal Eyeliner - they really need to make this permanent) very thickly to the upper and lower lash lines. Don’t worry about getting it neat as it will be covered over later. Just make sure it is very black, very dense, and quite thick. You will likely need to reapply after you’re done with your eye shadows.

—-
Step 2: Run a deep navy blue shimmer along the lower lash line to get a smoky finish. Do not apply the blue shadow to the water line. You want to keep the liner very black there.

—-
Step 3: Pack the star of the show, a bright duochrome magenta to the lids, up just past the socket line. As the pink goes over the black liner from earlier, it’ll transform into a lovely dark blue sheen.

—-
Step 4: Dab your brush into a blend of both the magenta duochrome and the navy shade from earlier, and very lightly buff it along the outermost section of your socket line to add a bit of depth and contour. At this point, you may want to touch up the black kohl or liner along the water line, as it would probably have shifted and faded a little. (A second layer also helps to keep it on better.)

—-
Step 5: Finish with lashings of black mascara. I wanted to keep everything still looking smoldering by keeping all the darkness just to the inner rims of the eyes, so I skipped false lashes here, but if you really want to go to town with this, you can definitely pop on falsies.
