Coral Lipsticks: Shades, Swatches, Tips!

Coral is that hybrid shade that is not quite orange, not quite red. Some even have a shot of pink and peach thrown in. Read down further for brands and details of the swatches listed!

It can be a hard shade to wear if you don’t take care to even out your skin tone with a good base or concealer first (it can make blotchy skin blotchier) or a little matching blush on the cheeks (it can make medium to dark skins sallow-looking).

But get your base covered and coral is its own statement and does not need much eye makeup accompanying it. (Interestingly, all the beautiful looks I found featuring coral lips had MINIMAL eye makeup.)

P.S. Thanks to all of you for chipping in with your favorite corals! More, more! We need to know where all the good stuff is!

Orange Candy: Juicy, Bright Orange Lips (and Tips)

Swatches above (L-to-R): Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Coral Reef,  Milani Mango Mambo, MAC Morange, Lime Crime My Beautiful Rocket, Revlon Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti

Orange is such an eye-popping color that you’ll instantly draw all eyes when you’re wearing it. Here are a few tips to help you make it work.

  1. What you need to note when choosing an orange is how much red/pink is in your skin. If you have very noticeable pink undertones, choose an orange that has stronger red tones (e.g. Milani Mango Mambo) rather than a true-true orange that has a lot less red tones than your skin (My Beautiful Rocket).
  2. If you have very pigmented lips, you might need to get more opaque formula (like the MAC or Lime Crime) in order to getting a true orange on your lips. If you’re not used to a bright orange or want to tone it down for school or work, go with a translucent formula like the Revlon Lip Butters or Balmstains (Tutti Frutti).
  3. A translucent formula would also work well if you have very pink undertones in your skin, because it allows the pink of your lips to show through under the orange.

MAC Lady Danger Dupe Request: NYX Matte Lipstick

—-

I got a question regarding what NYX lipstick would be a dupe for MAC’s Lady Danger. Well, I don’t know of any exact dupes currently, but intensity and shade-wise, this is the closest that I can find at the moment.

NYX Matte Lipstick in Pure Red.

It’s a creamy-matte which feels very comfortable on the lips, and is warmer and more orange than MAC Ruby Woo, which is why it’s quite close to Lady Danger (chili-red with an orange kick).

I swatched it next to NYX’s Indie Flick matte lipstick, because I added just a touch of Indie Flick to my lips for the actual 100% Lady Danger dupe. If you’re really on a budget and just want one lipstick, my money’s still on Pure Red, as Indie Flick is a brighter red-orange, more similar to MAC Morange.

P.S. Eye products worn:

  • Coastal Scents Hot Pot in Copper Pot on inner half of lids
  • 88 Original/Matte Palette soft purple on outer half of lids (the only purple in the blue row)
  • MAC Macroviolet Fluid Line along upper lashes (metallic plum/purple)
The New “It” Lip: Tangerine Lipstick
—-
According to Allure magazine, the new “It” shade for lips in Spring/Summer 2012 is Tangerine.
Well, let me just say first that orange is not a color I ever liked on its own. But it somehow looks so gorgeous and so much more bold on the lips than red or coral!

Sometimes, you just want something loud, but nice.
ONE WORD OF CAUTION!
Please trim your beards, ladies.
This shade can make any hairs or blue-based discolorations around your lips look more obvious, so make sure you check (even if you don’t think you have a visible mustache). If you have genetic discolorations around your lips, you may have to use a peach-toned corrector under your powder or concealer.

Options:
For drugstore ranges, there is L’oreal Volanic Lipstick (which I’ve read about but never seen in stores. If you can get hold of one, swatch it and reply to this post please!) There’s also Milani 42 Mandarina which is quite close to MAC Morange but maybe a touch redder.
From the higher end brands, there is the ever-fabulous MAC Morange, as well as the more daring My Beautiful Rocket from Lime Crime. Both have quite a similar creamy texture and are highly pigmented.
In the lip swatch photo (NC25 skin), you can see the differences in the 2 shades. These are definitely not “just coral”. They are really and truly orange. Morange has a bit more coral thrown in, so it’s good for those who have more red/pink in their skin tones, or are a bit new to this whole “tangerine lip” thing and don’t quite dare to go all-out yet.
My Beautiful Rocket is the more unapologetic orange, and more of a statement lip because it’s noticeably less red than most other orange lipsticks on the market. If you want lips like below, a more red-toned alternative is just not going to cut it.

Either way, put either of these shades on and watch everyone’s eyes pop when they catch sight of your face!

Lime Crimemy Beautiful Rocket: Orange lipstick and Indigo lidd tutorial

What goes with a super-bright, true-orange lip?
Well warm Fall colors like russets and golds would look good, but you can also swing the other way and do contrasting shades in bright tones. To keep things soft, I am using shimmer instead of matte, which would be a bit stronger.
Step 1: I’m using a shimmery dusty blue-purple (try Lime Crime Twilight) for the outer 2/3 of the lid.

Step 2: Using a soft golden green, I fill in the inner corners of the lid, blending just slightly into the blue. (The Body Shop #44 Single Eyeshadow)

Step 3: Line the upper lash line with a purple pencil (Bourjois Regard Effet Metallise #78 Bleu Chatoyant). Add a pale golden green pencil (Bourjois Contour Clubbing Liner #44 Golden Grey Session) to the lower lash line.

Step 4: Apply black liquid liner along the upper lash line and then add a pair of false lashes. (Any that are not too cat-like and flared at the outer corners will do.)

On the cheeks:
NYX Cinnamon Blush -  a matte vermillion-orange (red-toned)
On the lips:
Lime Crime My Beautiful Rocket - a bright true-orange lipstick
