The Purple “V-liner” Look: Simple Work/School-friendly Makeup (Wearable for Girls with Glasses!)

When you wear glasses, it tends to hide most of your eye makeup but the bonus is that you get to wear stronger colors than most people do.

This is a fun and straightforward liner look that works for most eye shapes, because it extends into the socket-line. It’s not going to look like too much straight-on if you wear glasses but from the side and every time you blink, there’s a surprising stroke of color that will show up.

Peach Gold and Smoky Violet: Bottom Liner Look
—-
I’m a fan of lining along the bottom lashes (because it’s such a great way to wear strong colors without the look being too over-the-top.
Most of the time, I pick a medium brown for the lid and a pastel shade for the lower lash line but today, I wanted to do a variation using contrasting tones of a soft peach-gold and deep, smoky purple.
—-
Step 1: Sweep a peachy-gold shade over your entire lid (I’m using MAC Melon pigment), and then add taupe to the outer corners (MAC Patina - sorry for the MAC love today but do not feel you MUST use these exact shades.

—-
Step 2: Line the water line and tide line with a creamy black kohl or kajal. (TIP: Kajals are creamier and more pigmented than other liners. Draw it on thick and bring out right to where they overlap the root of the lower lashes for that slightly “glossy” look when it hits the light.)

—-
Step 3: With a flat brush (I’m using a teeny-tiny one from Coastal Scents - more on that later) run a rich dark purple - MAC Grape Crushed Metal Pigment - right under the lower lashes, bordering the black kajal.

 —-
Step 4: Finish with black mascara.

—-
Special Tool Feature: The Destiny Detail Mini (Coastal Scents)
From L-to-R: CS Pro Blending Fluff, CS Destiny Detail Mini, and Make Up Store #217 Pencil Brush
This is without a doubt the tiniest non-liner brush I own. Quality-wise, it’s great; no shedding or bleeding when washed. The bristles are also soft enough that I can use them around the delicate lash line without feeling like I’m poking myself in the eyes.

Usage-wise, you can see it’s a really tiny brush. This means if you’re drawing a line, you will probably need to re-dip your brush a few times since it won’t pick up a lot of product.
On the other hand, it’s really great for getting into the inner corners of the eye when you want to stroke on a bit of color in precise areas such as the lash line. There will still be fallout depending on the eye product you’re using of course, as with most other brushes.
The other thing this is great for is applying an uber-thick swatch of gel liner, the way Mila Kunis sometimes does.

Pink Aura: Smoky fuchsia, purple and grey look (Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Look #3)
—-
This is a 3rd look created with the Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Eye Shadow Collection (I’ve getting my money’s worth, dang it). I’m doing the “MAC Smoky Eye” with deeper shades at either corners, and the lightest color in the center of the lid. The overall look is colorful but soft and blended with no hard lines or edges.

The 3 shades used for this look are:
Junkshow: duo-chrome satin fuchsia with blue sheen (MAC Stars n Rockets is higher-sheen but similar)
Omen: duo-chrome medium satin-purple with blue sheen
Ace: Smoky metallic grey
You don’t need to use shades with exactly the same duochrome effects (although that would be fun). Matte and regular shimmer would work just as well.
—-
Step 1: Pack the bright pink shadow into the center of the lid and smoky gently up just above the socket line. When your eyes are open fully, you should see a bit of pink peeking above your eye lid fold.

—-
Step 2: Pack the medium purple shade onto both sides of the pink, taking care to stop just short of the inner most and outermost corners. (The purple looks grey here due to the angle of the light. See top-most picture for the true shade.)

—-
Step 3: With a pointed pencil brush, run a smoky grey shadow along the lower lash line, then pack into the outermost corners of the upper lid. With what is remaining on the brush, sweep gently inwards along the outer half of the socket line to sculpt the eye a little, and dab into the inner corners of eyes as well.
With a soft blending brush, blend out any harsh edges to the grey.

—-
Step 4: At this point, if you’ve muddied up any of the colors, use your finger to gently dab more purple and pink onto the respective areas. This will intensify the color.
For a little extra oomph, I applied purple metallic pencil  to the waterline (you can use regular grey or black but that trace of purple is just much more interesting).
Finish with black mascara!

Velvet Brown with a Purple Twist (88 Warm and 88 Shimmer Palette)

This is a simple, flattering look which is wearable for the day, and fun for the night. You can also streamline it to just 2 shadow shades if you want. A matte medium-deep brown, and a metallic medium-purple.

1. Apply base and then pack on a medium brown matte shadow all over the socket, and along the outer half of the lower lash line.

2. Fill in lid with a deep matte taupe brown and layer on a medium satin brown, blending and spreading up over the brow bones. Then line upper lash line with dark brown or plum liner.

3. Apply a rich medium metallic purple wet (I used MAC Fix+ to foil my shadow for instant liner), JUST along the lashline, and layer for more dramatic sheen if needed.

4. Apply generous amounts of black mascara on top and bottom lashes, and voila.

Current: Purple Nails and Eyes

Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t find most purples to be that easy to wear on a day-to-day basis.

It has always been one of my favorite colors growing up, so you can bet I will have way more purple items lying around than I actually would wear.

One of these is Sally Hansen’s Grape Fizz polish. I loved how it looked in the bottle, but was terribly disappointed when I got home, applied it, and found it to be a really sheer purple “stain” rather than the rich metallic hue I had hoped it would be.

So it sat on my shelf for months.

Until I suddenly thought about layering it with a deeper creme color.

Enter my trusty chocolate milk polish, O.P.I.’S Over the Taupe. This sassy sister’s apparently also a team-player. Worn under Grape Fizz (below), it was sufficient to bring out all the rich wine-grape tones without actually turning everything brown.

It’s now just a lovely plum/grape color.

Of course, now that I found a way to make my Grape Fizz work, I had to get some sort of theme going on my face. I’m not crazy about matching, so much as complementing. So I reached for one of the very few items in my stash which I consider to be fool-proof.

The dark prune metallic pencil (#79 Violet miroitant) from the Bourjois Regard Metallise line. The brown, blue, green and black liners in this collection get a lot of press, and honest to goodness, I love and own them all.

But I find the true MVP for the collection; the one that I can reach for when I’m feeling totally lazy (like today), need to look work-appropriate, but want a little more zing than the usual blacks, navies and browns can give, is the purple.

In real life, it appears a lot more brown/gray, but I like how it’s dark enough to define or create a smoky look, while having enough color to still be interesting.

Other products worn in the photo above:

  • Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara
  • Revlon Colorstay #310 mixed with L’oreal UV Perfect SPF30

Do you have any go-to purple products that I should know about?
