MAC Viva Glam Nicki 2 Amplified Lipstick: Swatches and Mini-Review

Color:

This is a chalky, dusty lavender-toned creme lipstick that’s little more cool and grey than Saint Germain.

As you can see in the comparative swatches above, it’s not as much of a true-purple as the 2 Lime Crime purples, but it’s also not a true pink either.
On the lip, it has a tendency to look much chalkier and more lavender than it does in the tube, so this is not a color for the faint-hearted. There is nothing natural looking about it. It’s much lighter than my lips, even on my light NC25 skin.

Spring Pink: Find the Light Pink Lip that’s right for you!

We find outselves drawn to that soft, candy-like pink lip on other people, but it can often go terribly wrong when we apply it on ourselves. Here are 10 options and the women they’d look good on.

Coral Lipsticks: Shades, Swatches, Tips!

Coral is that hybrid shade that is not quite orange, not quite red. Some even have a shot of pink and peach thrown in. Read down further for brands and details of the swatches listed!

It can be a hard shade to wear if you don’t take care to even out your skin tone with a good base or concealer first (it can make blotchy skin blotchier) or a little matching blush on the cheeks (it can make medium to dark skins sallow-looking).

But get your base covered and coral is its own statement and does not need much eye makeup accompanying it. (Interestingly, all the beautiful looks I found featuring coral lips had MINIMAL eye makeup.)

P.S. Thanks to all of you for chipping in with your favorite corals! More, more! We need to know where all the good stuff is!

Tips and Tricks: What To Do with a Blue Lip Mix!

The idea of blue lips always sounds so ridiculous. Until you actually wear it and realize it looks pretty cool.

I’m demonstrating with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic’s Rx Lip Tar, which is a rich creme cobalt blue. It’s quite deep and strong in real life, but for some reason in white fluorescent light, it looks bright blue.

In 2 of the images, I applied Lime Crime’s deep indigo-blue glitter, Aquarius, over the Lip Tar. The glitter is darker than the gloss, so it created a deep metallic-looking effect. To see the intensity/depth of the final color, check out the low-light image above. (I apologize for the unfocused image; for some reason my camera doesn’t want to focus without light. I probably should have tried an indoor setting.)

10 MAC Lipsticks Worth Checking Out

This is a bare-bones, no-frills recommendation of 10 different MAC shades for every lipstick newbie.

These are by no means the only great shades in MAC! I picked them in consideration of whether they were relatively unique to the brand and not that easily duped. They also might not flatter every person equally, so definitely test them out at the store and use this list more as a reference/suggestion to the types of colors and textures to look out for when you’re at the MAC counter.

Roses, Pinks and Nudes

Rebel - deep semi-sheer berry creme

Rebel looks scarily dark in the tube but actually goes on sheer and creamy, and not nearly as bruised/purple-looking as it seems. This is very flattering on most skin tones, but much more dramatic on the very pale.

Pink Nouveau - bright satin pastel pink

This classic pink has an impressive fan-list (Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj). If you want a sort of cool-toned, semi-matte bright pink that isn’t going to look too Snooki on, try Pink Nouveau. Looks fantastic on very pale and dark skins.

Saint Germain - pale blue pink creme

Super pale, super bright… this lipstick contains so much white pigments that it literally jumps off your face even if you’re really pale. ONLY for drama queens. It’s not going to look good on everyone so try before you buy!

Pink Plaid - matte blush-beige

If you want a kittenish pout but matte nudes make you look like a corpse, get something that’s a little more pink/peach. Pink Plaid is just that sort of muted lip color with a hint of flattering color.

Creme Cup - creamy, semi-sheer blush-beige

Sort of like Pink Plaid but sheer, and a touch more beige. Very easy to wear with any smoky eye, and low-maintenance enough that you can slick it on without a lot of liner, primer, etc.

Purples and Reds

Up The Amp - Soft medium mauve/purple creme

This unique color is so different from most shades around but it’s amazingly flattering on many skin tones. If you’re porcelain skinned it could look a little goth/punk though, so test first. Fab on medium to dark skins.

Prince Noir / Diva - Dark plum / Dark liver-red (both matte)

It’s tied between these 2 shades, but I seem to have misplaced my Diva so I can’t swatch it. Prince Noir is more dramatic, and Diva is more of a classy dark red. I personally find Diva more wearable, which is a good thing since it’s available at regular MAC stores.

Ruby Woo - Retro-matte scarlet

The reddest red there is. This red is so intense it makes Russian Red look like brick-red. The texture is not the most comfortable for some people since it’s even dryer than regular matte lipsticks, but then Ruby Woo gives a uniqely uber-matte effect combined with super-saturated color that is really hard to duplicate conveniently, it as my default scarlet.

Impassioned - Fuschia-coral creme

If coral is too yellow for you and fuchsia is too blue, get Impassioned, which is the perfect cross between the two, and just as bright. It IS rather flattering and I recommend wearing it with minimal makeup on the rest of your face just to let your lips speak for themselves.

Morange - Bright acidic orange

This is a take-no-prisoners orange. Not quite a traffic-cone orange since it has just a bit more red thrown in, but that’s also what makes it more wearable. If you have darker skin and want a similar effect, try Lady Danger, which is a bit deeper and redder. Be prepared to be stared at when you wear this.

INGLOT Freedom System Shadow Haul and Swatches!

INGLOT hails from Europe, and while it’s available in the US and Australia, it’s relatively unknown throughout most of Asia.

I recently popped into the INGLOT store at Times Square in NYC, and picked up a whole bunch of the Freedom System shadows. Theses are individual pans without cases that you run at $6 each (currently), and you can top up the amount with a bit more money to get a magentic palette for them. I opted out of getting a palette just so I could get more color for my money.

Each square-ish pan comes in a black box, and is sealed into a plastic case with clear vinyl that you peel off at the back.

You can’t reseal the plastic but you shouldn’t have any problems just tucking the pan back into the plastic sleeve and then inserting it back into its black cardboard.

Texture:

This is where the INGLOT shadows really shine.
They actually remind me of Shu Uemura’s in texture and intensity (if not quite as buttery and creamy).
They are CERTAINLY more pigmented than MAC’s in general, but if I had to choose I’d compare them to the richer Frosts and Veluxe Pearls. The matte INGLOT shades are outstanding. I kinda regret only picking out 2 now. They are silky and extremely pigmented, without being overly chalky so you won’t get as much fallout as you would be other matte shadows. Most of the time, you need to work hard to build up or even out a matte shadow, and they usually fade and dust off quickly as well, but these are incredibly easy to work with.
Shades:
INGLOT has tons of shades of course. I didn’t want to get too many that might be similar to shadows already in my collection, so I ended up leaving out most of the neutrals and a lot of the brights as well.
The ones I got, I love.
I’ll call out shades as must-try:
  • #46: This looks like a beige in the pan but on the skin, it shifts into a lovely ivory and pink pearl with sparks of silver.
  • #07: Soft beige-gold that’s great for deeper skin tones. It’s not easy to find a shade that isn’t too brassy, too chalky, or just too darned yellow. This one is a softened sheen with just the right amount of “skin” color added that it won’t appear harsh.
  • #414: This intense blackened emerald is a little like MAC’s long-discontinued Green pigment, or a darker Antique Green.
  • #340: Dark matte marine-green. It might not look that pretty in the pan, but this is a fantastic alternative for those of you who want a really cool alternative to the usual smoky eye, but don’t want sparkle. Also doubles as a very cool smoky liner around the lash line.

Value:

Fantastic!

This is professional quality at very affordable prices. Each pan also goes from around 2 to more than 3g of product depending on the texture (MAC pans are 1.5g each), so you’re getting more bang for your buck.

Out of all their products that I tried, I have to say I’m most impressed by their shadows. Aside from this and their fabulous lip paint pots, I don’t find the other products to be too exciting in terms of quality vs cost.

I just wish they would branch out to more countries AND KEEP THE PRICING CONSISTENT. (I’m looking at you, MAC.)
